MIDINES + NESFX 1.0 Frequently Asked Questions
Firstly the recommended way to insert/run MIDINES 1.0.
Q 01: MIDINES requires so much force to insert, why is this?
Initially it turned out to be a fluke, the PCB's were thicker than the original Nintendo made edgeboards, however the increased thickness provides better pin contact, and also prevents against data loss in a situation where the NES recieves intense acoustical vibration (dj booth). So it was decided to just go with it, also on the account that the old NES pin connectors that had problems with other cartridges happened to work with the MIDINES PCB. There *is* a reccomended way of inserting MIDINES, and that is to slowly insert it with a side to side (back and fourth) motion. Run MIDINES with the game slot in the up position, do not depress it down as you would normally for standard games, as this has been known to cause flashing white screens.
Q 02: When I turn on the NES I get a flashing white screen, or a white screen, what is the problem?
Do not run MIDINES with the game depressed down, leave the cart in the unlatched/upwards position. MIDINES currently uses a thicker PCB for the edgeboard than standard Nintendo Cartridges. Even though this helps maintain pin contact with older NES pin connectors, if the cartridge is latched in the down position it can cause a white screen or flashing white screen. To remedy, 1st remove MIDINES carefully using a side to side (back and fourth) motion till it is removed, 2nd slowly re-insert MIDINES using the same side to side (back and fourth) motion, and leave in the unlatched/up position. Or..
The problem is could be due to an old pin connector for the NES. Replacement parts are available on EBAY for a couple of dollars. Or...
If you have used MIDINES for a significant amount of time oxidation builds up on the cart contacts and requires cleaning. For cleaning only use an appropriate electronic cleaning compound. Or..
Lastly you may have a NES of a different region than specified in the MIDINES auction. Ex, using a PAL NES, instead of a NTSC NES but winning/ordering a NTSC version.
Q 03: How long will it take to receive MIDINES after auction close?
A 02: 7 to 21 days depending on your distance from California USA.
Q 04: Is MIDINES available for PAL?
A 03: Currently no, MIDINES is only for NTSC Americas region as of present. However PAL tested versions for Europe should be available in a few months.
Q 05:: Will MIDINES work with a Famicom using a converter?

A 04:Yes, (Thanks Kaseo for testing)
Q 06:: Does MIDINES get stuck inside the NES? Does the cord prevent the game from being inserted properly?
A 05: No, the MIDI cable out is placed so that no modification of a stock NES is necessary to use MIDINES. Also MIDINES uses a 5 foot male ended din cable. So in most applications MIDINES does not require an additional MIDI cable, simply load into the NES, and plug into your MIDI OUT port and you are ready to rok!
Q 07:: Will a future version of MIDINES allow me to load my own samples?
A 06: It will be looked into, and will be part of 2.0 if so.
Q 08::Is MIDINES a Nintendo Licensed Game/ROM?
A 08: No, this is an independent effort and has no affiliation with Nintendo what so ever. Since all units use 100% original ROM's & code and use actual Nintendo CIC chips and cases there is zero copyright infringement. The original game ROM chips are tossed. All ROM code for MIDINES is 100% original.
Q 09:: Can MIDINES run in an emulator?
A 09: No, there is a separate microprocessor (that is not set in stone) that does 95% of all MIDI processing that current NES emulators do not emulate (emulating a PICMICRO is probably infringement on Microchip's MPLAB anyway). Besides MIDINES is about the sweet RAW VOLTAGE of the 2A03!
Q 10: What is MIDINES's latency? I am having problems with the example MIDI files offered on the site, they have problems playing back.
A 10: Latency is very low, so low some sequencer + audio card combinations can have problems with playback, a few such problems have been encountered with FL Studio. If you are using a high latency setting with your audio drivers and running FL Studio your MIDI performance will suffer considerably. This is a FL Studio issue, not a MIDINES one. Use Winamp 2.x as a test. Play the MIDI files in Winamp specifying your appropriate MIDI out, if the MIDI files still do not play correctly test your midi cables. With software such as FL Studio where sound driver latency performance degrades MIDI performance, use ASIO drivers at as low a latency as they can handle. For example if you are using FL Studio with a SoundBlaster Live card, use the kX ASIO sound drivers at low latency settings to increase MIDI playback performance. Low speed sequencing is less likely to reveal this problem, but a high speed arpeggio is a good test of MIDI latency, you should be able to take any MIDI signal and have MIDINES handle that MIDI stream well into the audio modulation frequencies.
Q 11: When I turn on or off NESFX (start button) sometimes the screen freezes.
A 11: Hit SELECT a few times. It should eventually toggle back, some controllers have an issue with high frequency polling, (aka glitchy or old controller contacts).
Q 12: Can I run MIDINES 1.0 without a TV/Monitor?
A 12: Yes, just remember to hit SELECT to switch into MODE 1 to increase audio/MIDI polling performance, MODE 1 turns off the buzz caused by the picture processing unit (chip), so you can listen for the buzz to tell whether MIDINES is in MODE 1 or 2.
